hasta que la sangre roja le sale a borbotones del labio;

- o-o-ho!
Porque cuando uno tiene diez esposas,
También quieren ser besadas.
También quieren ser besadas.

The beauty of German Language

There is a wide extended intelectual cliche about the beauty of languages: "each language is beautiful in its own terms". That is probably true from a theoretical, relativistic perspective. But from my limited, ego-centered point of view, standard German is the most beautiful language I can read or speak (the spectre of comparison is limited, though, considering the thousands of languages that exist on the Earth: my skills are limited to and very unevenly distributed among Spanish, English, Italian, French, Portuguese and Yiddish).
True, German lacks the -conventionally beautiful- melody of standard Italian (that is, of the dialect from the Tuscany that turned to be the official language of Italy) and certain varieties of Spanish and Portuguese. But the German I know has its own melody, and once you get familiar with it you discover its intrinsic beauty, which nevertheless is quite pale compared to the rhythms and accents given to the language by speakers of certain dialects like those from Swabia, Frisia or the Rhineland. It is also a phonetically rich language, plenty of sounds that do not exist in most Latin languages or English (but that I have found in modern Hebrew), that make me enjoy the basic experience of listening to some native speakers, even if they say irrelevant things, because of the softness and lightness whit which they articulate sounds that I will probably never be able to imitate: soft and hard variations of the consonants "r", "b", "t", "g", or the 3 vowels that do not exist in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese: ä, ö and ü.
But what I love the most are not these elements. Is its intrinsic poetry, that makes it possible to write beautiful literature and poetry, but also turns everyday speaking or writing into a landscape of -delicate or stark- unsuspected metaphors that sometimes pass unnoticed to native speakers. You don't say, for instance, that you miss your home(place), but you say that you have "Heimweh". The two particles of that word are "Heim" (home) and "Weh" (pain, but also subjective suffering). You are not "affected" by something, you are "betroffen". That is, something (an illness, the effect of a process) has reached you, it has met you. An the role of metaphor in the construction of nouns is also present in names, like the masculine Thorsten (Thor's stone) and the feminine "Hildegard" (Hilde: battle; Gard: enclosure).
Let us not forget, nevertheless, that in that respect German is nothing but one of the heirs of the old love of ancient Germanic peoples for metaphors. Those peoples are the same who composed and recorded the sagas and other narrations where we can at least foresee from afar the old history of metaphor as cornerstone of language and universal tool to name complex events and feelings among these peoples (Jorge Luis Borges and María Esther Vásquez wrote about it in "Literaturas germánicas medievales").
Art is one of the realms of culture where it is possible to find the richest examples of how that ubiquity of metaphors in German makes it possible to construct elaborate depictions of feelings, natural phenomena (landscapes, meteorological processes) or history. That is what made German romantic poetry so beautiful and complex, and settled a tradition honourably retaken by Rammstein. But Rammstein is much more than its sophisticated revival of romantic poetry. It also articulates several core elements of German culture, like the passion for industrial production, architecture and machines, the deep articulation of discipline, power, domination and sexuality, and the fascination for the hyper-masculinised body that we have inherited from the Nazis. The subject deserves, nevertheless, a specific entry that will come in still undetermined but not so distant future.
The following video shows a choir performing an a-cappella version of "Du hast", that also reveals the specific weight of choral music in Rammstein's oeuvre. It could not be otherwise considering that, as I have just said, the band preciously articulates core elements of German culture. The monumental inheritance of the Benedictine monks, Haendel and several others who where shaped by German culture along centuries despite they usually composed or sang in Latin, could not be left aside.
Bibi Galeano shared the video that inspired this text, and my conversations with Johan Felipe Leal about Rammstein made me revisit its music with the new perspective shaped my current knowledge of German culture.
